GRAPHICS

I have a very diverse design background. I've worked on projects from logos, letterhead, and packaging to brochures, calendars, direct mail, newspaper and magazine ads. I have lots of experience working with large and small printers and have always had good working relationships with them. Some projects have had large budgets and long lead times and others were "shoe-string" with tight turnarounds. I've always strived to produce the best work under whatever circumstances I've been called to work in. Here is a sampling of projects from all backgrounds.

Las Gardenias brochure

Client: Las Gardenias Condominium Homes
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: I did the production, not the design, on this brochure. There were several tricky areas on this brochure: the screened back flower image on the cover, the product photos which were not high enough resolution, and a siteplan that took a long time to create in FreeHand. These condos are located in Cabo Real, Mexico, so the ownership language changed several times as information came from the lawyers. The designer and, most importantly, the client were very pleased with the final brochures.

The Hartford insurance company direct mail brochure

Client: The Hartford Insurance
Employer: The Hacker Group (direct mail ad agency - freelance)

Comments: Fulfillment brochure for The Hartford Insurance. I was responsible for all production on this piece. I worked with the art director on the design, and then created the layout. I also chose the interior photos and prepared them for printing. This brochure was to be sent to the customer after they responded to the initial letter mailing.

Milgard Windows calendar

Client: Milgard Windows
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: I did all the production and designed some of the pages on this calendar. I was given the front and back cover and one of the interior spreads from the designer and was asked to create the rest of the calendar. All photos were shot professionally on locations around the country and then sent to the agency for cropping and placement. There were some last-minute photo changes right before the production deadline. The client was very happy with the calendars and they ran out quickly from underestimated demand on the client's part.

Orenco Station/Costa Pacific Homes magazine article reprint

Client: Orenco Station for Costa Pacific Homes
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: This project was a reprint of an article about Orenco Station in Professional Builder magazine. I designed the cover and the Costa Pacific Homes ad shown. The photo in the ad required a lot of touch up in the grass area. Orenco Station in Portland, OR was a winner of the National Homebuilders Association Community of the Year award.

Practitioners Publishing Company new product direct mail catalog

Project: New Product Catalog
Employer: Practitioners Publishing Company (in-house agency)

Comments: This "new product" catalog won an award for best brochure design and printing from the Printing Industries Association of Texas. It was the first time PPC had mailed a stitched catalog in the smaller format. In terms of units sold, this brochure was in the top 10% out of over 100 PPC direct mail campaigns for the year. I designed the catalog, wrote any product copy needed, and coordinated the printing and mailing.

Johnny Light product package

Project: Johnny-Light toilet light
Employer: RBJ Manufacturing (freelance)

Comments: This blister card was designed to attractively display the product (toilet light) to be sold in a mass retail environment. The client supplied the photo and copy, and dictated the blister position for the product. I created the logo and overall design.

Frames packaging

Project: Framer's Gallery logo and packaging
Employer: Michaels Craft Stores (in-house agency)

Comments: I created this logo for Michaels Craft Stores brand frames. The company wanted to make the background look like specialty paper so a sample was sent to the foreign printer that was then recreated in 4-color process printing. The logo was a challenge because "Framer's" tended to look like "Farmer's" so several versions of type fonts and designs were tested.

Michaels Stores Christmas packaging

Project: Christmas logo and packaging
Employer: Michaels Craft Stores (in-house agency)

Comments: I created the Christmas logo used in the packaging of of Michaels Craft Stores brand products. The logo had to work in three different color schemes (the others were red background and silver background.) The logo was also used for in-store signage that I designed to be easily read on the shelf. I also created logos for Easter and Fall packaging.

Port Ludlow homes information sheets and folders

Client: Port Ludlow
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: Port Ludlow is a master-planned community in Washington. I did the production on this folder and home selling sheets. These sheets are typical of the many floorplan and features sheets produced by the agency. The home illustrations were done by outside illustrators. The floorplans were run through a conversion program and then "cleaned up" and/or changes made per the homebuilder.

Gem Shavings stationary

Project: Logo and letterhead
Employer: Gem Shavings and Sawdust Company (freelance)

Comments: This company produces bags of sawdust product sold in feed/pet stores for use by animals like hamsters and goats. I was asked to do the logo from a sample supplied by the client. The logo was then applied to the letterhead, envelope, business cards and huge product bag.

Sherman Homes stationary

Client: Sherman Homes
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: I did the production on this stationary set for Sherman Homes, a homebuilder in the Seattle area. It was a challenge to get the image screened back the right amount to make the designer happy. There was also a foil stamp on the logo on the cover of the folder.

Pizza Time newspaper ad

Project: Newspaper ad
Employer: Pizza Time pizza (freelance)

Comments: Pizza Time is a Seattle-based local pizza chain. I was asked to create the half-page ad for this special newspaper insert. I had to include the menu, locator map and phone number. The chain owner told me that this restaurant's traffic increased as a result of this ad.

The Burnsteads Homes and Land ad

Client: The Burnsteads
Employer: sgwcreative (ad agency)

Comments: The Burnsteads are a family trio of homebuilders (dad and two sons) in the Seattle area. This ad was one in a year-long campaign of ads that were rotated in issues of Homes & Land magazine and also produced in black-and-white newspaper ads. The featured communities and community specials were changed regularly. Both this color ad and the black-and-white version won silver awards for Best Ads from the local Master Builders Association. I did the production on these ads.
